DAY 2O, JANUARY 21, 2023, DO IT AFRAID
I discovered some time ago that people who change history are not fearless. They are fearful, but they go ahead and move in the direction of their dreams anyway.
They give me the courage to walk the truths I have discovered and do it afraid.
That is why I admire artists like Van Gogh, Rembrandt, and Henri Matisse. Or writers like Charles Dickens, Charlotte and Emily Bronte, Georgette Heyers, Phillis Wheatley, Sarah E, Farro, and Lorraine Hansberry, who made her mark by becoming the first African American to have a play performed on broadway.
Many of these artists have made an imprint on my life; some sit around my invisible mentor’s table. Some received very little recognition, and some died impoverished.
I am still determining where I will end up, but I will keep moving forward until time as we know it is no more.
So, that’s my takeaway for today. If you have a dream deep down inside you, a desire that you think will benefit others and yourself, and you fear what others will think, let it bother you if you want, but don’t stop being what you were destined to be. You’ll only see change once you learn to do it, afraid.
My list for the week
- I’m revising the first 10K of my new novel. It usually takes me at least four to six days to fix 10K. I like to send her what I call my final draft so that she understands the direction I’m moving in.
- I have a letter to write. I had decided to wait until after the Challenge, but my gut is telling me to do it now, which is what I will do.
- Answering emails and text messages, Daily
- Attend my writing classes and do my homework,

Pat, I’ll put you right up there with those timeless artists. You have a few hidden talents of your own.
No one takes my writing seriously besides my daughters. I write paranormal suspense, and my friends believe my books are bloody horrors. I tried to explain they are more romantic suspenses, but it didn’t help. So I ignore people’s comments and write what I enjoy.
Let’s face it Susanne, most of our friends don’t support us anyway. So just continue to write for yourself.

Great post, Pat! I read this quote recently, “Courage is simply the willingness to be afraid and act anyway.” I’ve also heard it defined this way: Courage is not the absence of fear, but it is taking action despite the fear. I must say, you are one of the most courageous people I know.

Hi Pat–I attended a wonderful multi-media Van Gogh exhibition here in Schenectady recently. It was truly amazing, since viewers were surrounded by his works. What a shame that he died in poverty. Lorraine Hansbury’s play, “A Raisin in the Sun” was extraordinary as well. Have you read any Zora Neale Hurston? I took a class in college in Black literature. She was by far my favorite.

Very motivational post, Pat! As someone who lives with anxiety, this rings true for me. I’ve learned to work THROUGH it because there is so much life to live. Nothing, not even the ruminating voice inside my head, is going to keep me from living it. Great post!

Hi Pat, an inspiring post. I think most people find many things in life a bit scary at first. A first day at work can be very overwhelming and publishing a book that you have laboured over for months and even years, is also scary, but it is worth overcoming the fear and getting it done.

Good morning, Pat! I too have adopted the phrase “Do it afraid”! As writers we can also “Do it tired/happy/confused/inspired.”

Yes, as writers we have the chance to explore ourselves, our world and the people who inhabit it. That exploration brings the chance to open doors and discover what is behind the door. Sadly, too many of us don’t discover that because we are afraid and we go to the grave with whatever talent was behind the closed door and the talent is never used.
