DAY 10, JANUARY 11, 2023,
It was raining when I woke up this morning. The clouds were in a cluster formation but were darker than they usually are.
After going through my morning routine, I came downstairs to make coffee.
Today is my knitting day. Yes, I have been learning how to knit for four years, and I do mean learning. I discovered a knitting group in the post office right in my village that consists of little old ladies that knit like professionals. I asked if a beginner who knew nothing about knitting could join them and learn, and they welcomed me. Since then, it has taken me over four years to learn how to knit beanies and two scarves. I also started on a pair of socks four years ago, but socks are way over my head. You knit socks with four needles, and I have my problems with two needles. So one-fourth of a knitted sock is still in my knitting basket.
What I like about these women is that they know I am a writer, and sometimes I can’t attend because of things that come up; yet, I’m a welcome part of the group and feel at home.
None of them speak English, so I had to learn how to knit in German. Sure, I make mistakes, but I have learned to take the stitches out and start back over. The ladies I knit with insist that I know how to knit correctly.
I had planned to start on a sweater this month. I have the material already, and you can believe me when I say the ladies’ eyes are sparkling because they look forward to passing on what they know to me. Unfortunately, I had to postpone it this morning until February.
They’re a highly talented group of ladies who knit, crochet, and make all kinds of puppets and curiosities that you have to buy in stores for a lot of money.
I have completed some items on my list, and removed them, and included my knitting group.
- Revise the first 10K of my new novel. It usually takes me at least four to six days to revise 10K. I like to send her what I call my final draft so that she understands the direction I’m moving in.
- I have a letter to write. I had decided to wait until after the Challenge, but my gut is telling me to do it now, which is what I will do.
- Answering emails and text messages, Daily
- Attend my writing classes and do my homework,
- Do the accounting books for the Romantic Women Fiction Chapter of the RWA,
- Visit each blog in the Days 8 and 9 Challenge of A DAY IN MY LIFE.
- Knitting Group in the Post.

I haven’t knitted since high school when I made a red and white striped scarf, but the colors didn’t attach well. Afterward, I created needlepoint pictures. I even had a few framed and hung in our apartment.

Hi, Pat! Kudos for joining the knitting group! I know those ladies love having you and passing their knowledge on to you. I can imagine the sparkle in their eyes when you told them you’re ready for a sweater. My daughter knitted me a winter scarf, which I use when I head north in cold weather. I knitted about four inches of a scarf before my knitting needles found a new home. You’re expanding your German vocabulary at the same time. I admire you!

Pat, I love that you take time out of your busy life to knit with the German ladies! I’ve heard it said that knitting, crochet, etc., can be contemplative, but I never found that to be the case. I could never knit comfortably! It always hurt my hands and now I have arthritis in all my fingers, and it’s even worse. I do crochet, though, and have made some nice things over the years, even a couple of afgans. Hang in there and you will finish those socks!!
Knitting is hard, Pat! I used to know how to crochet (sort of), but I gave that up, too. I flunked apron and skirt in the seventh grade, so I’ve given up on trying to make any kind of garments! Brava for you! Your lists continue to remind me how organized you are. I need to get more organized…One of these days!
Pat, you paint such a terrific picture of you and the little old German ladies knitting and speaking German. There’s a story in there. You have so much going on, but it suits you. Thanks for sharing with little ole boring me.
I used to cross-stitch when I was younger and loved the rhythmic motion of it. I also made macrames with my mom. Those were in the days before life was super hectic and I could just relax. Maybe one day I’ll get back into doing them. I’m happy you have found a group that embraces you, Pat.

Hello again, Pat! My comment was “under construction” and disappeared. I saw a note that said it was in moderation but I didn’t put my name or email in, so I’m not sure what happened. Sorry if I’m sending a duplicate.
In any event, I understand completely when you say that your gut is telling you to write. That’s where I am right now. The final first draft of a novel has me absorbed in the plot. That is a major reason I didn’t accept the blogging challenge. Knitting is such a super talent. Kudos for diving in and learning how!
