DAY 10, MARCH 10, 2024, HAPPY PRETZEL SUNDAY!
I’ve established a tradition since becoming single: eating a pretzel with butter on Saturdays and Sundays. The fresh German pretzels I buy in the bakery are delicious. If you get one fresh out of the oven, that is a heavenly delight.
Known as the bretzel in Germany, the pretzel originally stems from Bavaria. However, the Italians also claimed to be the first to make the pretzel, and they date their findings back to 610 when a Monk created them to use dough that was left over. Whether that is true or not, I don’t know.
I had my first pretzel here in Europe, and it was so tasty that my favorite pretzels are made in Germany.
Of course, there are pretzels now in the United States. They have been there for a while. The Germans and Swiss who immigrated to the USA took their recipes with them. Most of them settled in Pennsylvania and became known as the Pennsylvania Dutch.
Nowadays, pretzels in the USA come in all kinds of flavors and toppings like yogurt, strawberry, mustard, chocolate, etc., but I still prefer pretzels with a small scoop of butter on the side.
Thus, if a bakery is near you, go out and buy three or four and enjoy your pretzel time.

Most carnivals and festivals here in the states have hot, soft pretzels for sale. I love sprinkling them with salt and dipping it into mustard before each bite.

Pat, I never got the opportunity to taste a hot out of the oven pretzel. The ones I ate were right out the bag and hard. Nothing I care to remember having. I’ve gone to amusement parks where they were likely to be but I don’t remember eating one or a corn dog. How unfortunate of me. I do remember cotton candy. 😝

Germany is beautiful. The nicest thing about where i live is that I’m approximately 4 hours from France, 4 hours from Switzerland, 3 hours from Munich, and 40 minutes from frankfurt am Main, and those are all car distances. We don’t have speed limits on the interstate so I don’t recommend that you drive while here but I will be driving anyway and I don’t drive so fast that people get scared. Most people say I am a good driver.
I’m remodeling this year and hope to be finished by the end of this year or the middle of next year, so you’re welcome.

Hi Pat–I haven’t had a pretzel in a long time. I like the soft ones (my old teeth aren’t too keen on things with a hard texture). Your post is sending me in the direction of trying to find one. I’m sure the ones here aren’t anywhere nearly as good as the ones you find in Germany!

When we shopped in Lancaster, PA, we’d find men on the street corner selling bags of hot pretzels. Yum!
To give Mom a break from cooking, our Saturday night menu was typically pretzels and ice cream, often Neopolitan.

Love this, Pat! And love pretzels! The big baked dough ones are OK, but I am still a sucker for the small, crunchy ones – especially the 7 inch long the Bavarian thick stick pretzels – I used to pretend they were cigars when I was a kid and slowly eat them/get them shorter and shorter… thank you for writing this piece!

Bavaria makes the best pretzel! The nice thing is I am surrounded by five bakeries and two of them are in Bavaria. My home is five minutes from the Bavarian northern border of Bavaria. I have a five minute drive and I have my Bavarian pretzels.

Pat, there was a pretzel place in the mall near me named Auntie Ann’s. The line was out the door. I have no other place to compare it to, but their pretzels were delicious to me. Especially hot-out-the-oven! Wonderful post.
