DAY 12, MARCH 12, 2024, HAPPY NATIONAL ORGANIZE YOUR HOME DAY!

Good Morning, Everyone,

I am smiling about this special day because I have been in the process of organizing my home since February 2024. I decided last year that anything I wasn’t using, regardless of what it was, would be going to a junk house, which in German is called Sperrmüll.

In our communities, one fills out a card and sends it to the people responsible for picking up old furniture, electric items, and small things, like flower vases, chairs, etc, to dispose of. We pay for the privilege to do this through our municipal taxes, which are paid yearly.

Therefore, I am remodeling my home, and the first step I am still doing is packing everything downstairs in a room in my basement so that it can be picked up after I have turned in my card requesting pick-up.

I am downsizing, and I want to. There are only so many glasses you can drink out of, coffee cups you can enjoy coffee in, or chairs you can sit in. Since I know you can’t take it with you, why should I keep it? Thus, I have promised myself to enjoy my home and not clutter it up.

By the way, the picture of my stairway that I showed on my blog on DAY 8 is the first part of my home I uncluttered.

Now, I can sit on my stairway and dream whenever I want to. And that is an incredible feeling.

Have a lovely day and take care.

Shalom shalom,

Pat Garcia

  1. Hi, Pat! We decluttered when we moved to our new home, but we still brought so much with us! My daughter, a minimalist, says I have too much clutter (family photos, treasured mementos), but I call them memories and enjoy living among them. My office, on the other hand, needs a lot of decluttering! I cleaned it once, but only stuffed what is visible into cabinets and drawers. That doesn’t qualify as decluttering. I applaud what you are doing and wish you the best!

I love your beautiful staircase with the hall window lighting it up.

    Blessings!

    1. Hello My Dear Patty,
Thank you for dropping by. I am smiling because your daughter may be right, but you do have the right to keep precious memories by you so that you can look at them when you want. As for me, I am hoping to be finished this year or the middle of next year. I want to paint my living and my dining room because of my fireplace.
      Have a lovely Sunday.
      Shalom shalom

  2. Pat, I applaud your choice to get rid of the clutter. That is something I have been working on recently. For me, it’s not that I cannot take it with me. It’s more a matter of the sheer weight of the useless stuff I still have on hand. It has taken me some time to accept the need to lighten the load, but I am fully on board with you now.

  3. My daughter is doing the decluttering in preparation for moving. I told her all she has to do is to take her clothes and food and trash everything else…which is is doing. The new house has everything new, and more coming. Unfortunately, because of her small condo, WE are the storer of all Scarlett’s old toys, clothes, etc. Can’t wait for her to move so we can send some of this stuff back to her. I, too, love that staircase…we see very few like that here in the states. Almost halfway there, y’all!

    1. Hi, JP,
I believe your daughter will be the happiest person in the world when she moves into her new home, Scarlet too.
I love my staircase too. It is really a made in Germany, and I like the way the window lets in the sunlight and the sunlight lights up the stairs.
Yes, we’re almost halfway there. That’s a good feeling.
Thank you so much for stopping by.
      Shalom shalom

  4. Pat, Decluttering is so important for our homes as well as our psyche’s, so good for you!! I love the style of your elegant stairway. Have a beautiful day.

    1. Hello, Maura Beth,
Thak you so much. I love my stairway also. It is so wonderful to see how it lights up my hallway.
Have a lovely day and take care.
      Shalom shalom

    1. Hi, Yvette,
I feel the same way everytime I get rid of something in the house.
      Thank you for coming by.
      Have a lovely day.
      Shalom shalom

  5. Clear the house, clear the mind is a true maxim. Kudos to you for undertaking this task. I notice the lace curtains on the transom and side windows, very German, I think.

    1. Hello, Marian,
Yes, clear the house, clear the mind is a true maxim, at least for me it is. And yes those are lace curtains on the transom and side windows. I have them also in my living room. I believe the lace curtain are not only German, but also for the Dutch in The Netherland, Danemark, Norway and maybe Sweden.
Thank you so much for stopping by and take care.
      Shalom shalom

  6. This is Day 12? I thought we were on Day 11. I’ll check when I get back home.

Your stairs are something I never seen before and de-cluttering your home is not an easy process. I did my own de-cluttering and it can easily become a continuous process if you are not careful. In other words, you can accumulate so much stuffvbefore you know it.

Thanks for sharing your home with us.

    1. Hello, Shirley,
Yes, de-cluttering is a tiresome task. A couple, who are like a brother and sister to me, are helping me. They are dependable and trustworthy, and I’m glad I have them helping me.
Thank you so much for stopping by.
      Shalom shalom

  7. Years ago, I had an idea. I wouldn’t bring any new items into the house without eliminating something I no longer needed. Although my intentions were good, it hasn’t worked.

    1. Hello, Karen,
You never know. Maybe, you will start again. Sometimes, we just need a break.
Thank you for stopping by my dear.
      Shalom shalom

    1. Hello, Joy,
Thank you. I like the way it is built. Germans keep their houses up. I admire that about them.
Thank you so much for stopping by, Joy.
Have a lovely day and take care.
      Shalom shalom

  8. Super inspiring, Pat! I’m doing the same but not as actively and productively as you. Best of luck – it’s going to feel great, which can only help your writing too!

    1. Hello, Lisa,
Thank you. That is exactly what I think too. It will increase my productivity in my writing.
Have a lovely day and take care.
      Shalom shalom

  9. Wow, Pat! Time to declutter. I’m doing it too but for different reasons. I’m moving to a new place, so giving up stuff I don’t need or haven’t used for long.

    1. Hello, My Dear Sonia,
Good luck with your de-cluttering. I hope you enjoy your new place.
Thank you so much for stopping by.
      Shalom shalom
